Living Stream Ministry is pleased to announce a new series of issues in Affirmation & Critique entitled “The Words of This Life.” This new series considers key biblical words that signify important aspects of our Christian life and our church life—words like faith, eternal life, grace, oneness, glory, church, and worship. Although these wonderful words are common to all the believers, Brother Lee expressed his concern that many of these words have been “spoiled by Christianity, which has entirely missed the proper meaning of the proper words” (The Indwelling Christ in the Canon of the New Testament, ch. 5).
Regarding the word sanctification, for instance, Brother Lee says:
“Many Christians have heard about sanctification. However, the concept of sanctification in Christianity is much different from that found in the Bible. The vocabulary, the terminology, is the same, but the understanding is vastly different, because the dictionary of today’s Christianity differs from the dictionary of the Bible.” (Life-study of Hebrews, msg. 67)
Because so many biblical words have been spoiled by Christianity, Brother Lee spent much time and effort to update the dictionary of the Lord’s recovery to match the dictionary of the Bible. Under Brother Lee’s faithful ministry, we in the Lord’s recovery have a recovered dictionary, different from the dictionary of Christianity. Because of this, it is sometimes difficult for us to communicate with many dear, seeking believers, as Brother Lee says in another place regarding the word life:
“We may speak concerning life, but even for the word life they have various interpretations; the word is the same, but their dictionary is different. When we speak of life, they nod their heads, but after the meeting we find out that they were nodding about something else.” (Practical Lessons on the Experience of Life, ch. 15)
This new series of issues in Affirmation & Critique will explore the common misunderstandings of these biblical words and present the recovered and proper meanings of these precious words in the light of God’s New Testament economy.
We feel that this new series of issues will be an excellent way to introduce seeking believers to the riches of this ministry, and we hope that these issues will be widely distributed among those outside of the Lord’s recovery.
The first issue covers the word faith. For many Christians, faith is mere assent to the truth or mere trust in Christ for salvation. But according to the New Testament, faith does much more than this. Faith receives, faith substantiates, and faith realizes all the hidden, spiritual realities in God’s New Testament economy and joins us to these realities, making them real and operative in our being for the carrying out of God’s eternal purpose.
