The God of Resurrection

This booklet begins by asking questions that have troubled human beings throughout history: “Why should man, who has been created by God, be subject to suffering throughout the whole course of his life? Why should men still continue to suffer after they become children of God? And why should men’s sufferings increase with the increase of their devotion to God?” The answer to these questions lies in seeing the distinction between two titles of God, the living God and the God of resurrection, and seeing their relationship to God’s eternal purpose. The accomplishment of God’s purpose involves our having “an experiential knowledge of God not only as the living God but also as the God of resurrection.”

A God Who Hides Himself

Have you ever noticed this statement in the Bible—”a God who hides Himself”? Many Christians have never realized that God’s Word contains such an expression, but Isaiah expresses this thought most emphatically (Isa. 45:15). We may know God as the almighty One, as the righteous One, as One full of grace and compassion; but as the One who hides Himself, He may be unknown to us. “Our personalities are diametrically opposed to God’s personality. He likes concealment, we like display; He does not crave outward manifestations, we cannot be content without them. John 4:24 says, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit.” This is a very important verse. When we contact the physical world, we use our body, the physical part of our being. Similarly, we use our soul, the psychological part of our being, to contact the psychological realm. The principle is the same in the spiritual realm. If we would contact something spiritual, we must use our human spirit. God is Spirit, and so we must contact Him, worship Him, and fellowship with Him in our spirit and by our spirit.

Pray-reading the Word

Have you ever considered that the Bible is a prayer book? In this booklet, Witness Lee presents the rich practice of turning the words of the Bible into our prayer. “You can open to any page of the Bible and start to pray with any portion of the Word. The Bible is the Book, the Holy Book. Every word that proceeds out through the mouth of God is different from anything else.” When we take in the Bible “by means of all prayer and petition” (Eph. 6:18), turning it into our prayer, we are spiritually nourished. We call this practice pray-reading. When we pray-read, we are supplied, because there is really something of God in His Word; the Word of God is His very breath. If we would practice to pray-read, we would receive something nourishing and strengthening which will inwardly empower us and enliven us all the time.

Tell Him

He allows us to tell Him anything. No matter what we tell Him, He will listen, and He will sympathize. Do not think that He will not listen to whatever you may tell Him. He is happy to listen to our sorrows, and He is happy to listen to our joys. In fact, He is waiting for us to tell those things to Him. He is the Lord to whom we can tell everything. Since we have such a Lord, why not tell Him all?
